...Why we are running

It's time for a change on the Cabrillo Unified school board.

The incumbents have been on the CUSD board for nearly a decade now. Our district gets about $19 million every year to spend on just 3800 students; there is no excuse for not providing every student an outstanding education. Obviously, innovative ideas and follow-through are desperately needed at coastside public schools.

As your representative on the school board I will:

Make excellence in education the priority at coastside schools:

· Focus on improving students' education rather than on raising funds from school fees and taxes.

· Scrutinize curriculum and raise educational expectations so that all indicators of district educational achievement improve.

· Make sure that parents' and students' concerns are heard and addressed.

· Implement fair and consistent disciplinary procedures.

Work with parents, teachers and all members of the coastside community to ensure that the school board considers the impact of its decisions on the entire community and the coastside environment.

· Revisit the decision to locate the new middle school far to the south of town. The remote location of the proposed new middle school will result in increased coastside traffic, long commutes for our children, and has polarized our community.

· Revisit the decision to charge bus fees. Imposing a fee on transportation was another indication that the incumbent school board deems local air quality and traffic problems to be none of their business.

We believe that every student has special needs and deserves to have those needs met. We do not believe this will take any more money than is currently spent. Instead, it requires thought, planning, communication, study on the part of school personnel. Innovative, effective programs don't always cost the most.

It's not about sitting at the district office in meetings twice a month. And it's not, mostly, about money.

It's about getting out into classrooms, soliciting community input, keeping involved in the day-to-day activities of students and teachers. We have demonstrated that we are able to commit the time and thought necessary. It's time for a change for the better at coastside schools.
