Elephant seals don't mind mud. Luckily, kids don't
much mind mud either, in fact, a number of them plain enjoyed it.

One 3-year
old, who walked almost the entire way herself, set herself the challenge to walk
through each and every puddle, no matter how deep. She emerged from Ano
Nuevo spattered but triumphant. No wonder we were the slowest group on
tour!
The plucky and substantial group of Mothers' Club participants who braved
Ano Nuevo on Martin Luther King Day, 1999 were amply rewarded. Threatening
skies and downpours as we arrived in the parking lot ended abruptly, leaving
mud, much mud, it's true, but rainbows too.

The bachelor seals were out in force. Two demonstrated in bloody, noisy
detail how ridiculously aggressive male mammals can be. Then, we were
on to the rookeries. Three pups had been born that day. We saw many, adorable
hundred-or-so-pound babies suckling. From all reports, most of the children
who attended slept well on the way home. An educational and beautiful
day was had by all.
